The Monks of Majuli

Originating from Assam, India, the monks of Majuli are one of the highest respected performers of the Sattrya dance which is a sacred art within the eight major classical Indian dances. The Sattrya art from originates from the monasteries (Sattras) of Assam region which are placed in river islands and it has been of spiritual and heritage importance for around 500 years since its inception in the 15th century by Srimanta Sandarkeva. The art form has since been associated with bhakti (spiritual devotion) and supportive of the abolishment of the caste system and having respect for other religions and walks of life.

The Monks of Majuli have performed, taught and conserved their art form within and outside the borders of India and their live show includes a musical performance accompanied with a traditionally choreographed narrative dance.
